Associate Professor and Lead Faculty in Communication Design
BED 1987 North Carolina State University (Visual Design)
After earning her Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design, Martha Lewis spent the subsequent fourteen years working exclusively in the advertising and design profession, applying her creative skills and learning about the structure of the business, the necessity for new technology, and the importance of strong client communications. Eventually, Martha established her own client base, freelanced for design firms, and began teaching part-time at Virginia Commonwealth University. Shifting her focus to academia, Martha became an Assistant Professor at VCU’s satellite campus in Qatar, teaching in the Communication Design program from 2001-2006 and serving as head of the program for three semesters. Since moving to Portland in 2006, she has maintained a small design business while teaching graphic design and communication design at Portland Community College, Clark College, and PNCA. In addition, Martha has studied metal arts and spends time creating wearable as well as non-wearable three-dimensional pieces.
