Remembering PNCA Faculty Emeritus Manuel Izquierdo

PNCA Faculty Emeritus Manuel Izquierdo, who passed away July 17, is remembered by the PNCA community for his career as an artist and art educator.

Izquierdo taught at the College for 46 years. He was also an alumnus of the College, graduating from PNCA in 1951.

Along with his legacy of work as a sculptor, his pieces can be found throughout Portland’s parks and public spaces, and as a printmaker, Manuel has shaped Portland’s cultural landscape through teaching and mentoring generations of artists.

His sculptures, where welded metal takes on lyrical, abstracted forms, can be seen in many public spaces including Pettygrove Park between Market and Harrison where his large sculpture “The Dreamer” has its 30th anniversary this year. PNCA’s Manuel Izquierdo Gallery is named in his honor and continues his presence in the PNCA community by educating the community on trends in sculptural work through exhibitions of three-dimensional work by local artists.
