MFA Student Proves That Taste Matters

To Tricia Martin, eating is art.

As an MFA student in PNCA’s Visual studies program, Martin proves it through her “blog”:http://eatingisart.blogspot.com, hosting themed dinners, and creating dynamically crafted events centered on the intersection of design, art, and food.

The blog “frolic!”:http://elseachelsea.typepad.com/about.html currently features Martin’s work in the story ““taste matters””:http://elseachelsea.typepad.com/frolic/2009/02/taste-matters.htmlanne

This last summer, with her project Pietopia, Martin posed the question, “What kind of pie would describe the way you are feeling right now?” and had a contest to find out. “More than 50 entrants from as far away as Seattle and San Francisco submitted a pie recipe and 300-word story to explain the ingredients,” wrote Rebecca Koffman in an article for the _Oregonian_.

The most recent iteration of Pietopia is an exhibit at the Niche Gallery at the Ecotrust building, 721 NW Ninth Ave. On exhibit are “six screenprints done by four different artists and myself as a reinterpretation of the people’s winning stories,” says Martin. “A visual component to the story.”

The screenprints are by PNCA’s own Justin Bland, Christopher Huizar, Jason Traeger, Mia Nolting and Tricia Martin, on exhibit until March 12.
