Caldera Report

Painter Wallace Whitney Lectures Thursday
Wallace Whitney, a Bronx-based painter whose gestural, atmospheric style recalls New York School painting, speaks at an MFA Visual Studies Lecture on Thursday, October 28, at 6:30 pm, as part of the 2010-2011 Graduate Visiting Artist Lecture Series.
MFA Portfolio Day

Norman Klein Idea Studio
Norman Klein, cultural critic, urban and media historian and novelist, will deliver the PNCA+FIVE Idea Studio lecture Navigating Scripted Spaces: the Moving Image Since 1550 on October 21.
Philip Tinari on Ai Weiwei
Philip Tinari, founding editor of LEAP, a new bimonthly journal of contemporary Chinese art based in Beijing, will lecture on the practices of Jingdezhen porcelain production in the context of Ai Weiwei’s approach.

Visiting photographer and educator Ken Storch shares a selection of his work from The Jail Project, portraits of inmates at Arizona’s Maricopa County Jail, in a moderated discussion with Writer-in-Residence Barry Sanders on October 12 at lunchtime.
4th Annual Alumni Weekend
The 2010 Alumni Weekend marks the College’s fourth annual alumni celebration and features events on October 8–9. This year’s festivities include an Alumni Dinner, the annual Homecoming lecture by alumnus and Faculty Emeritus George Johanson ‘50, which is free and open to the public, and a tour of Ai Weiwei: Dropping The Urn.

Ellen Lesperance Wins Betty Bowen Award
PNCA Faculty Member Ellen Lesperance was recently named the winner of the 32nd Annual Betty Bowen Award presented by the Seattle Art Museum. Three hundred and fifty artists from Washington, Oregon and Idaho applied this year for the award, held in honor of the late arts supporter Betty Bowen, who died in 1977. In addition to a cash prize, her work will be displayed at the museum and she will give a talk on October 21.
