Ai Weiwei Released
Chinese authorities have released controversial artist Ai Weiwei after nearly three months of detention for “economic crimes” despite outcry and many appeals from the international arts community. Ai is an outspoken dissident of Chinese government and often incorporates political commentary into his work.
Elizabeth Whelan, Artist-in-Residence
Textile designer Elizabeth Whelan works in residence at Museum of Contemporary Craft in conjunction with Laurie Herrick: Weaving Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. Whalen will weave a prototype inspired by Herrick’s shawls.
Open Spaces Panel Discussion
On June 24, Illahee and PNCA present a panel discussion with the editors of Open Spaces, featuring Angus Duncan, Richard Benner and Ed Sheets, who will discuss three perspectives on regional innovation.
Jessica Helfand and Kate Bingaman-Burt in Conversation
I Heart Art: Portland presents a special Salon Discussion on June 16 with visiting designer and journalist Jessica Helfand and local designer and illustrator Kate Bingaman-Burt. They will discuss visual biography as it relates to scrapbooks, American history and pop culture.
Last Days of Thesis Exhibitions
The 2011 Thesis Exhibitions are drawing to a close this week and next. Be sure to visit the BFA Thesis Exhibition on campus, the MFA in Visual Studies Exhibition in the Goldsmith Blocks and the MFA in Applied Craft and Design Practicum Exhibition at the Galleria before it’s too late.
Summer Institutes at PNCA
PNCA offers two summer institutes this year. Boundary Crossings: An Institute in Contemporary Animated Arts runs July 19–29, and the Summer Institute in Collaborative Design runs August 15–18.
Portland Craft Party
I Heart Art: Portland presents the Portland Craft Party, a celebration of all things craft that benefits Japan Earthquake Relief on June 10, in conjunction with Etsy’s worldwide 2011 Craft Party.
PNCA Breaks Gala Record
This year’s gala surpassed Spring fundraising records as guests contributed sponsorships and special appeal gifts totaling over $440,000 to PNCA and Museum of Contemporary Craft. Contributions support students, faculty, exhibitions and programs. Read the press release.
Around the Center
With over 80 years of combined association with The Gallery at Museum of Contemporary Craft, the wood and metal work of three artists—Dale Larson, William Moore and Greg Wilbur—is featured for the month of June.
