PORTLAND, OR – July 1, 2011 – Pacific Northwest College of Art is proud to announce Boundary Crossings: An Institute in Contemporary Animated Arts, a summer intensive that immerses upper-division undergraduate and graduate students in interdisciplinary explorations designed to provoke critical and creative outcomes at the leading edge of contemporary animated arts and scholarship.

As digital technologies evolve, the boundaries separating live action, animation and image processing become as porous as the display platforms that host them. Boundary Crossings embraces the hybrid-moving image by combining critical thought, fine art practice and digital technologies. Over the course of two weeks, participants in Boundary Crossings will explore the theme of “Faith and Fiction” through practice sessions, screenings and hands-on making to create works that activate a public space. In working with a new definition of animation and the manipulated image, students push animated art forms beyond the screen to permeate our cultural landscape.

In conjunction with the classroom activities, Boundary Crossings will offer a series of events open and welcome to the public. Boundary Crossings opens with a lecture by Norman Klein, entitled “Dismantling the American Psyche,” in which Klein presents evidence of the frozen and the disengaged in American culture at this present moment. Intermation, an exhibition in the Feldman Gallery + Project Space, explores the relationship between the animated image and the screen by examining techniques for achieving motion. Another exhibition, Pre-Nostalgic, which features a fully immersive, large-scale, audio-visual installation by the DripDrop Collective in the historic Templeton Building, will be followed by a panel discussion between Marina Zurkow, Rose Bond and the DripDrop Collective, moderated by Tim DuRoche. Together with the Northwest Film Center, Boundary Crossings and PNCA present Re-Situated Animation, a screening which showcases artists who push animation beyond the conventions of traditional venues and into the fringes of the art world. Students in the Animating Public Space sequence will showcase their work from the two-week institute in the Closing Night Exhibition.
