2014 PNCA Graduates Honored with Commencement Address from Ecotrust’s Spencer Beebe
BFA and MFA thesis exhibitions showcase student work

Portland, OR—May 12, 2014—Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) proudly presents students in PNCA’s undergraduate Studio Arts, Media Arts, and Design Arts programs and three of the graduate programs of PNCA’s Hallie Ford School of Graduate Studies—MFA in Visual Studies, MFA in Collaborative Design, and MFA in Applied Craft and Design—for Commencement on May 25.

The 2014 Commencement Address will be delivered by Spencer Beebe, Chair of Ecotrust’s Board of Directors. Beebe is a fourth generation Portlander who spent 14 years with The Nature Conservancy before serving as founding president of Conservation International (CI) beginning in 1987. In 1991, with CI’s support, he founded Ecotrust to work in the rain forests of home. He serves on the boards of Shorebank Corporation (Chicago), Ecotrust Canada, Tamastlikt Cultural Institute, and Walsh Construction Company.

To celebrate the work of the 110 undergraduate and 60 graduate students who will be receiving degrees, the public is invited to view thesis exhibitions in Swigert Commons, the Stevens Studios, and the Bison Building.

The BFA Thesis Exhibition represents work students in Design Arts, Studio Arts, and Design Arts have spent senior year developing, writing about, and recently, presenting and defending during Spring Focus Week. The BFA students show their work in the Stevens Studios where they work throughout the year.

The graduate thesis exhibitions are dedicated to the work of students in three of the College’s six graduate programs of the Hallie Ford School of Graduate Studies. In Swigert Commons at PNCA work from students in the multi-disciplinary and mentor-based MFA in Visual Studies program shares space with capstone projects by students in the MFA in Collaborative Design program. And across town students from the MFA in Applied Craft and Design, a joint program between PNCA and Oregon College of Art and Craft, host an exhibition in the program’s studios in the Bison Building.

For over 100 years, PNCA has served as a creative hub for artists and designers with an educational philosophy that emphasizes individualized curricula, independent inquiry and cross-disciplinary exchange. Graduate programs at PNCA within the Hallie Ford School of Graduate Studies are designed to support students as they grow and define a sustainable, engaged and dynamic artistic practice that will continue to evolve years after graduation. PNCA’s graduate programs include the MFA in Visual Studies, MFA in Collaborative Design, Low-Residency MFA in Visual Studies, MA in Critical Theory and Creative Research, MFA in Print Media, and MFA in Applied Craft and Design, program in collaboration with Oregon College of Art and Craft.

As Oregon’s flagship college of art and design since 1909, Pacific Northwest College of Art has helped shape Oregon’s visual arts landscape for more than a century. PNCA students study with award-winning faculty in small classes. In the last seven years, PNCA has doubled both the student body and full-time faculty, quadrupled its endowment, and added innovative undergraduate and graduate programs. PNCA is now embarking on its boldest venture yet by establishing the Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Center for Art and Design as an anchor for the College’s vision of a new campus home on Portland’s North Park Blocks. Focusing on the transformative power of creativity, the capital campaign, Creativity Works Here, was launched in June 2012 with a lead gift from The Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation of $5 million. PNCA’s new home will be a bustling hub for creativity and entrepreneurship, reflecting the influential role of art and design in our 21st century economy – both in Portland and beyond.
