Day Job at Philip Feldman Gallery + Project Space at PNCA

Release date: 02/29/12

  Download Press Release

PORTLAND, OR – February 28, 2012 – The Drawing Center, New York presents Day Job, on view at Pacific Northwest College of Art, Philip Feldman Gallery + Project Space, from April 5-May 15, 2012. Comprised of work by 21 artists, the exhibition looks at the relationship between an artist’s “day job” and his or her creative practice. Although the term “day job” may be cast as something that steals time and focus from an artist’s practice, a generative relationship can also exist. Rather than subscribing to the idea that having a job is by definition disruptive, Day Job looks at the ways in which the information, skills, ideas, working conditions, or materials encountered on the job can become a source of influence. This exhibition explores the ways in which artists relate to and choose their day jobs, or conversely, how one’s job may serve as an impetus for creating artistic work.

Release date: 02/29/12

PORTLAND, OR – February 29, 2012 – Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) is pleased welcome Mark Takiguchi as the College’s new Academic Dean. Takiguchi comes to PNCA from California College of the Arts (CCA) where he was Associate Director of Fine Arts and prior to that, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies. As PNCA continues to grow both in size and influence, with five new graduate programs in as many years, an increasingly international engagement, and a campus expansion slated to begin later this year, Takiguchi’s deep experience in building programs is key. This year alone, the College launches the MA in Critical Theory and Creative Research and the Low-Residency MFA in Visual Studies as part of the Ford Institute for Visual Education (FIVE). The PNCA community has doubled in size since 2004, and growth projections show another 50% increase in the student body in the next two years. This is one reason why the College finds itself finalizing schematic designs for the linchpin of its campus expansion project, the renovation of the historic 511 building on Portland’s North Park Blocks this spring.

PORTLAND, OR – January 6, 2012 – Xylor Jane and B. Wurtz is a two-person show presenting major new works by two important contemporary artists. Wurtz (b. 1948) makes sculptural assemblages from string, socks, buttons, household implements and plastic bags. Xylor Jane (b. 1963) draws on numerical series including the Fibonacci sequence and prime numbers to make intricately patterned paintings, finding hidden curiosities and subtle patterns amidst swarms of numbers. This exhibition, curated by MFA in Visual Studies Chair, Arnold J. Kemp, represents the first time work by these two artists has been shown together, offering a unique opportunity to consider complimentary practices by two artists of different generations whose bodies of work are outside of the mainstream museum and gallery fare. The exhibition is the first major showing of the work of both artists in the Pacific Northwest and follows on the heels of the summer 2011 retrospective of B. Wurtz’ work at Metro Pictures, New York.
