Inaugural Alumni Art Auction Raises $100,000 for PNCA Student Scholarships

Portland, OR—March 2, 2016—Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) is pleased to announce that the college’s inaugural Alumni Art Auction at PNCA’s new Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Center for Art and Design raised well over $100,000 for student scholarships.

Under the leadership of Honorary Chair Jordan D. Schnitzer and Auction Committee co-chairs MK Guth and Brenda Smola-Foti, the auction featured works contributed by more than 70 alumni including Luc Fuller, Malia Jensen, Lucinda Parker, Jack Portland, Michelle Ross, Arvie Smith, and Lindsey White that were auctioned in both silent and live auctions.

Bidding was brisk throughout the live auction, which was conducted by Bonhams auctioneer Will O’Reilly. Nearly every work at auction was sold, and a lively bidding battle erupted over a work by Anne Crumpacker. Works by Ruth Lantz, Rachel Wolf were bid up dramatically while during the bidding for a contribution by Faculty Emeritus Arvie Smith, a student, unsolicited, encouraged bidding from the balcony above, calling out that Smith was the best professor and that he’d made such a difference in students lives.

“We had an extraordinary response from alumni who were incredibly generous with their donations. More than 70 of our alumni contributed their works,” says Darby Knox, PNCA’s Chief Advancement Officer. “And our community responded in kind with a great outpouring of support for arts education on behalf of all of our students.”

The Auction Committee included Mary Lee Boklund, Nan Curtis, Rebecca Demorest, Ashley Gibson, Emily Ginsburg, Tom Griffin, Killeen Hanson, Susanne Hashim, Darby Knox, Liz Leach, Matthew Letzelter, Maryellen McCulloch, Mack McFarland, Lennie Pitkin, and Jean-Pierre Veillet.

During the live auction, Troy Matthews, a current undergraduate student, asked Committee Co-Chair Guth if he could speak. “I’d just like to say that I am here on scholarship,” Matthews said. “And I just want to thank all of you who are here for supporting student scholarships.”

PNCA is also grateful to the following for their support of this event: PNCA Board of Governors, Bonhams, RBC Wealth Management, Ann Edlen, Mario’s, Siteworks Design|Build, Gallagher Capital Corp., First Republic, Argyle Winery, Dave Holt \ Dalla Terra Winery Direct, and Framing Resource.
