The curriculum of the Illustration department emphasizes high achievement in traditional picture-making skills along with the development of contemporary strategies for engagement in today’s multi-faceted, multimedia-based marketplace. Our career-focused students gain proficiency within a variety of studio and technology-based media while working to integrate meaningful ideas with a distinct personal voice.
Illustration students engage with the art form through an exploration of design, drawing and digital media in the foundation years, followed by an in-depth studio program that weaves conceptual thinking, technical skill and personal expression into each area of study. With a focus on professional practice and the development of a personal vision, students build the creative skills necessary for immersion in the dynamic illustration market.
“Contemporary illustration has become image-based, hybrid, multi-tasking — where artists interact with a rich and diverse list of creative opportunities. Our program equips students with a strong visual literacy, allowing for an open dialog with the professional marketplace.”
— Martin French, Department Chair
