Communication Design

  • Christine North

    Assistant Professor in Communication Design

I love the process of design. The thinking that goes into creating a beautiful brand is the same thinking that can be applied to product development, architecture, teaching and strategic planning. It has given me the freedom to pursue a variety of passions—designer, business owner, teacher, artist and sustainability geek. The power of design to engage, inform and transform people and ideas is absolutely awesome. How we design, resource and collaborate on current issues is critical to a true entrepreneurial education. In addition to being a member of the faculty at PNCA I teach design courses in the School of Art + Design, College of the Arts at Portland State University where I am also a Fellow at the Institute of Sustainable Solutions for the Living Lab sponsored projects. My interest is to further initiate student and faculty involvement in the Living Lab program through endorsed projects. Most recently I worked with students who partnered with the Oregon Environmental Council, Migration Brewing and The Institute of Sustainable Solutions to develop printed materials and programs that actively demonstrate the relationship between climate change, human actions and quality of life through the process of brewing a carbon conscious beer. What a great way to save the planet!

She joined Bitch Media as art director in March, 2010. She served on the board of AIGA Portland from 2004 to 2011, finishing her term as vice president. Michael has designed everything from restaurants to business cards, but it is the fluidity of designing for the web that really captured his interest. He especially enjoys blurring the lines between design and front-end development and, if you know anything about styling websites, he will try to talk you into using SASS and Compass.
