PNCA offers after school art classes in selected public schools for students with few other opportunities to learn about art

The Outreach Program

In the Outreach Program, PNCA offers after school art classes in selected public schools for students with few other opportunities to learn about art. The Programís goal is not only to teach art skills, but also to instill self-confidence in students and improve the studentsí focus and commitment to their education. This program is entirely supported through donations.

Participating schools are: Arleta Elementary, Woodlawn Elementary, James John Elementary, and Kellogg Middle School.

Piloting a new program

Beginning this Fall term, PNCA is piloting Phase I of a Youth Arts Specialist Program at Woodlawn Elementary School, a site that has previously been served by the Outreach Program. The goals of the pilot program is to develop a more in-depth, integrated and curriculum-based art program that will address the needs of more students throughout their school day.

To conduct the program at Woodlawn, PNCA will provide an Art Specialist who will offer professional development opportunities for Woodlawn teachers as well as deliver projects for classes during the school day. The PNCA Art Specialist would prepare faculty development workshops for in-service days. The workshops will supply classroom teachers with art project curriculum to integrate into other disciplines during the school day as well as an opportunity to experiment with new materials.

The College believes firmly in the value of an arts education and will continue to support the participation of PNCA faculty and students in the education of underserved youth in our community. We believe that the new program model will have a lasting impact on the participating youth, both enriching the curriculum as well as broadening participation.
