We’re gearing up for our annual Youth Program Exhibit which takes place during the month of March in PNCA’s Commons. Our students have been hard at work getting their projects completed for inclusion into the exhibition. This year’s exhibition theme is Portland Perspectives, artwork about living in Portland and what makes this city so special. Below is a sneak peak at some of the work in progress that will be included in this year’s exhibition.
We will also be exhibiting artwork from PNCA’s Youth Archive which houses over 1,000 works by Youth Program students created over the last century. Very cool! We can’t wait to share this work with the community. The exhibition will be in the Commons from March 1 – 30. Make sure to stop by and take a look!
Guess what! We’ve changed our spring scholarship application deadline! Our new deadline for both paper and online scholarship applications is Monday February 27th, 2012. You can apply at pnca.edu via our Online Application Form.
This last Saturday students in MaryEllen’s MiniMasters class worked on self portraits. They used chalk pastel to articulate shapes and add color. Using chalk pastel with students between the ages of 4 and 6 is always a fun and interesting experience. The pastel drawings always look amazing and the work created this Saturday was no exception. Pastel projects usually mean color everywhere; on the paper, on the tables, on little hands and little faces. We had quite a few students with hands completely covered in all colors of the rainbow.
The Portland Metro Scholastic Art Awards is on exhibit now at PNCA! This is an inspiring exhibition of Middle and High school artwork by students from in and around the Portland area. All different types of media are on display; from painting and printmaking, to ceramics and assemblage. The level of skill, originality, and personal voice demonstrated by students featured the exhibition is truly impressive.
Make sure to stop by PNCA and check out the Exhibition if you are in Portland. Click the jump to check out more images from this year’s Portland Metro Scholastic Art Awards The exhibition will be in PNCA’s commons from January 29th through February 24th, 2012.

You know what makes a great Saturday morning? It’s different for everyone, for sure. For me, a great Saturday morning has a little bit of sunshine, a crisp January breeze, and the start of a new round of Youth classes. We welcomed over 45 young students this weekend and had lots of fun in the process. I can tell that this is going to be an awesome term filled with great artwork. We already have some drawings, paintings, and prints in the works. Here is a peek at how our first day went.
Stick with us. It’s gonna be a great two months. Keep updated on our flickr site.
We had a great first week of classes and have been working on the new catalog. To the right is a first look at the spring cover by Lizzy House. The spring classes are online now and the summer will be coming shortly. New classes include Mechanical Advantage in Kinetic Sculpture, Etching and Special Projects in Ceramics. The full schedule of summer classes will be available soon.
A very cool group of students from St. Agatha Catholic School visited PNCA to participate in a hands on activity inspired by work from the ART.WRITE.NOW Exhibition. Led by Instructor Heather McLaughlin, students were prompted to choose a work in the exhibit and complete a short worksheet. Students then learned about value and ink wash techniques. Their drawing ideas were pulled from descriptive terms they were asked to write down relating to their chosen work of art from the exhibition.
If you would like to check out more images from our activity with the student’s from St. Agatha you can do so by visiting our Outreach Collection on Flickr.
For the last five years the Youth Program has offered an internship to interested BFA students during PNCA’s Spring semester. Our internship program has seen a great deal of change over the years, shifting from a somewhat informal 2-credit internship to a rigorous, hands-on 3-credit internship with an academic component and practicum. Our Interns work in our classrooms on Saturdays and assist Instructors. In the afternoon they learn different teaching techniques, educational approaches, etc. Here are some of our past participants.
It’s really great to work with these BFA students, and to see their enthusiasm for art and education. We have four new interns joining us for our Winter and Spring terms. They will be working in our classrooms starting this Saturday. If you would like to see what our students and interns are up to, visit our In the Classroom collection on flickr.
