A visit to the Stagecraft Building.

Students in Wayne Bund’s Art Explorers class visited our 3D Building and Ceramic Studio this week. They ventured out of their regular classroom in our Goodman Building to glaze some recently fired sculptural work. After arriving to the space, Wayne gave a brief explanation of how a kiln works, and at what temperature their artwork was fired. The kids were quite impressed with how hot a kiln gets when it is firing at Cone 6. Students were then allowed to get close to, but not touch, a kiln in mid-fire to feel the heat emanating from it. Afterwords, students glazed their work and did a super awesome job cleaning the space once their class was complete!

Evening Classes at PNCA

Our Continuing Education Program has been up to a lot in recent weeks. Classes are moving right along and some great art is in the works. Pre-College Painting Studio

The Pre-College Studios is still a few months away; July 16 to August 3. But we wanted to give you a preview of the type of work that comes out of our Program! Above is some stellar artwork from our Painting Studio with CE and BFA Instructor Benny Fountain.

Waterlilies Reinterpreted

Instructor Wayne Bund worked with our Art Explorers students on Saturday, teaching our youngest cohort about watercolor techniques and more specifically, Monet’s Waterlilies series. Students took the project in a variety of different directions. Some interpretations stayed true to the look of the original paintings… some took a looser aesthetic. Whatever the case, all of the paintings looked great!

A BFA Thesis and Youth Classes

Former Intern and Youth Program Staff member Bob Fish visited our classes on Saturday October 22nd. As part of his BFA thesis Bob constructed a larger-than-life crayon, which is completely functional. He let students in our Art Explorers, Drawing Studio, and Visual elements classes try out the crayon at the beginning of their sessions. It was super fun!

Our Art Explorers class worked together to draw lines on a super large sheet of paper. It was pretty great to witness 8 young students draw with one large drawing tool. If you would like to see more images from Bob’s visit to our classrooms check out our flickr site.

Visual Elements

Our Visual Elements class with artist and educator Kendra Larson has been going well. Students have worked on several drawings including an observed still-life. For the first two weeks of class students worked with charcoal, learning how to articulate value and space within a two-dimensional composition. During their third class session students worked with a variety of different materials and integrated color into their drawings.

Drawing from Life

This last Saturday students in Alice Hill’s Drawing Studio learned about volume and shading. Alice set up a still life with strong directional light so that her students could understand how light falls on an object, and how to render that object using lights, darks, and middle greys.

The children in her class did a wonderful job transferring what they saw in reality to the pages of their sketchbooks. Afterwords, Alice had students apply the skills that they had just learned to a more complex still-life with a variety of objects, both simple and intricate, including animal and human skulls, cups, books, and two small crows. We think the kids did a great job this week! What do you think?

Robots!

Take a look at this amazing robot that a student made in our Drawing Studio class with Alice Hill! Several robots made an appearance during this class including R2-D2, a Mommy Robot, and a Robot that meets all of it’s owners needs including dispensing pizza. Art Explorers

The first 2-weeks of Youth classes have been very exciting! Students seem to be jumping right into their projects with a level of energy that is contagious. This last week our Art Explorers class visited the Ceramic Studio in PNCA’s StageCraft Building. Students learned how to pinch and roll clay, and the scratch/attach method. Wayne Bund, our Art Explorers instructor, has given us a sneak peak at his syllabus and it looks like there are more great projects to come.
