Study Abroad

Expand your world while earning college credit towards your degree. From France to Australia, from Dakar to Tokyo, PNCA offers a wide range of study abroad options.

New cultures & perspectives

A life-changing experience

Studying internationally and off-campus can be a life-changing experience that gives you the opportunity to learn about a different culture, broaden your education with new perspectives, and develop an international network of friends and contacts. On a personal level, your time spent outside of PNCA raises a new awareness about yourself, your own culture, and a new understanding of art. The skills you learn abroad can give you a competitive edge in today’s job market society, as you develop an ability to adapt to diverse situations.

Opportunities through PNCA include both short-term and semester-long programs. All PNCA-affiliated programs are credit bearing and require an application to PNCA and, when applicable, to the hosting institution.

Semester-long Programs

Earn 12-15 semester credits while studying off-campus on semester-long programs. PNCA students usually study off-campus for one semester of the junior year. The International Office can help you find the right program for you and guide you through the application process.

Our International Semester Exchange program supplements your art and design education, by offering access to varied viewpoints and pedagogical lenses. Rather than focusing on the location of a study abroad opportunity, the International Office works with students to find a partner that will enhance their particular artistic interests. The International Office supports students who pursue a semester abroad at an institution within PNCA’s Global Learning Network.

Short-term programs

Global Studios

Global Studios are PNCA’s short-term, faculty-led study abroad programs that have included trips to the Venice Biennale, Documenta, Muenster Skulptur Projekt, and in 2018, the Berlin Biennale. Recent Short Term Programs have included trips to Beijing and Shanghai, China; Dakar, Senegal; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Tokyo, Japan; Parma, Italy.

Global Studios reach beyond the traditional academic calendar, generally preceding or immediately following a given semester, and have additional program costs. The program costs range from $4,500-$8000, which covers flights, housing, and a daily food stipend. Students generally earn 3-6 credits on Global Studios trips. We work with each student to ensure that the credits work within their academic plan. PNCA does offer financial support for these programs through travel grants and scholarships.

student aid

PNCA Aid that you receive to support your tuition at PNCA may be used to support Semester-Long Programs with affiliates and exchange partners. With international exchange partners, student pays the home institution and goes tuition free to the partner institution. With affiliates, the student pays the host institution tuition through PNCA. With non-affiliated programs the student pays the host institution directly. PNCA Aid may not be applied to non-affiliate tuition.

Our Director of Financial Aid for Short-Term Programs or Semester-Long Programs can help you identify resources of funding such as: PNCA Aid, PNCA Travel Grant, Loans, External Scholarships and/or Grants and determine how the Cost of Attendance (COA) for a particular program might within your financial aid package.

It is important to prepare a budget for tuition, room and board, international travel, in-country travel, books and materials as well as miscellaneous & contingency expenses. Financial aid can only be allocated for credits that fulfill requirements or needed electives.

PNCA Travel Grant

The PNCA Travel Grant is available to full-time, matriculated students who are traveling internationally on a PNCA-affiliated program. The grant is a forgivable loan and due upon leaving PNCA, unless the student graduates and the loan is forgiven. The grant amounts range from up to $1,000 for Global Studios programs to up to $2,000 for International Semester Exchange. PNCA Travel Grant is not available for independent or non-affiliated programs, unless the International Office has additional funds.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is an undergraduate program for U.S. citizens of limited financial means to enable them to study abroad, thereby internationalizing their outlook and better preparing them to thrive in the global economy. Students who are eligible for the Pell Grant should apply to the Gilman Scholarship.

GLADD Scholarship

As part of the Global Learning and Diversity Development (GLADD) initiative, the International Office offers need-based scholarships for students studying abroad with the International Semester Exchange program. In order to apply for the GLADD scholarship, students must work with the International Office to apply for the Gilman Scholarship. If the student does not receive the Gilman Scholarship, the student will be granted up to $5000 for the GLADD Scholarship. Upon the student’s return to PNCA, the student is expected to perform, display art, or speak about their experiences abroad. The hope is that GLADD recipients will encourage and insight a desire to study abroad in other PNCA students.
