ABOUT THE ARTIST
Melanie Stevens MFA '17, is an artist, illustrator and writer. She is the creator of the graphic novel series, WaterShed, and the co-founder and editor of Miss Anthology, an organization that supports and publishes racially and economically diverse young comic artists who identify as female or genderqueer. She is also the co-curator of Nat Turner Project, a migratory gallery space that grants artists of color the freedom to create or express their own language within and without the parameters of racial commodification or designation. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree for Political Science from Yale University and her Master’s of Fine Arts degree for Visual Studies at Pacific Northwest College of Art, where she currently teaches.
ABOUT THE INTERVIEWER
Irene Ramirez '19 is a first generation Mexican American artist and designer based out of Portland, Oregon. Irene grew up in Monterey Bay, California, which cultivated her great appreciation for the world of agriculture and the beautiful diversity of the natural world. For over 14 years, Irene has worked as both a chalk artist and graphic designer for various natural food grocers in the Pacific Northwest. She currently works as a freelance artist and designer, as well as a regional sign artist for New Seasons Market. Whether it’s creating package design, logos/brand identities, murals or chalk art, Irene loves bringing ideas to life.
