Friday Fives: Levi Brooks, Use All Five

Every Friday we give #highfives to a different designer from our extended family of PNCA students, faculty, alumni, and guest lecturers. 🙌🙌🙌 We ask them five questions.

Use All Five is a Los Angeles-based studio started in 2006 by Levi Brooks and Jason Farrell. Levi Brooks speaks on 11/28 at 7pm, as part of the Design Lecture Series presented by PNCA Graphic Design.

Guggenheim Storylines Brand Identity and Website: How can an exhibition build a continuum between physical and digital space?

Q: What do you geek out about?

A: I have a problem with geeking out about the past and the future. I need to focus more on the present! For example, I've been reading a ton about the future of creativity and AI. At the same time, I've been digging into how past civilizations (like the incas) used untraditional means to keep records of their stories.

Q: What do you do to get “unstuck?”

A: Nature—stepping out of the office and just walking off into nature has always been my go-to.

The future of the design will need more human intervention and collaboration...We'll actually need that human touch in solving our most challenging problems.

The Bohen Foundation: How can a foundation embody a spirit that continually reinvents itself?

Q: What feels vital to the future of design, to you?

A: Broadly speaking, the future of the design will need more human intervention and collaboration. In my opinion, with the use of machine learning—and on a bigger level, artificial intelligence—design will become more sterile and lack any soul. We'll actually need that human touch in order to be more effective in our communications, and in solving our most challenging problems. I'll bring this up more in my talk :)

Our challenge was to embody artist Doug Aitken's film installation, The Source, in a digital experience.

Q: What advice would you give your former self?

A: Writing is just as important in the design field as the design itself. I wish I was able to communicate more effectively about my work, ideas, and opinions. You underestimate how much you have to write on a daily basis in the real world.

In support of the relaunch of the new app, we helped out our friends at Headspace with their new website.

Q: Is there anything you wish you had known just starting out, that you know now?

A: Never be afraid to ask questions. Even if they seem like dumb questions, or you think you're annoying someone, just ask them. You'll be happy you did. Working on crafting better questions takes time and experience, but it's a skill that unlocks a lot of doors in design and in life.
