Alumni Highlight: Vanessa Briones
February 27, 2020
In less than a year after completing her graduate degree, Vanessa Briones (MFA 19’) has established herself as an up-and-coming creative voice in the Portland art community.
While a student at PNCA Vanessa Briones was able to manage multiple projects and creatively created opportunities for herself and her community. Vanessa was a 2018 Curatorial Fellows and received the Summer 2019 Thesis Award. She has consistently shown her work in Westcoast venues and was included in Samasama at the Shopkeepers Art Gallery in Washington, DC.
Recently her artwork was chosen for the exhibition Race and Revolutionary Struggle as part of the Ray Warren Symposium at Lewis and Clark and Araw Ng Mga Patay at at Avenue 50 in Los Angeles, curated by PNCA alum Nica Aquino. Briones has several paintings in progress, she is currently working on a book illustration project, and designing a deck of cards. Collaboratively she is creating a body of work with Qamuuqin Maxwell (MFA 20’) that will be included in Maxwell’s thesis exhibition. Additionally, Briones is the Assistant Director of an education company based in Los Angeles called Teach Play Learn.
The PNCA Low-Residency MFA in Visual Studies is excited to welcome Angel Nevarez and Valerie Tevere for a lecture on their artwork and practice Friday, January 15 at 6pm.
This event is part of the Hallie Ford School of Graduate Studies Winter 2021 Lecture Series. Join us Wednesday nights in July 2020 for conversations on art and ideas.
