PNCA Remembers Beloved Community Member and Philanthropist Dorothy Lemelson
April 12, 2021
It is with deep admiration and respect that Pacific Northwest College of Art remembers Dorothy Lemelson who passed away on March 10, 2021. Embraced within the PNCA family and remembered as a dear friend to many, Mrs. Lemelson’s commitment to the mission of PNCA and our students leaves an extraordinary mark on the history of the college.
Her memory is woven into the fabric of PNCA – including a campaign gift to name the Lemelson Innovation Studio and her consistent and generous support of PNCA projects, the annual Gala and initiatives throughout the years.
Her impact on the lives and careers of PNCA students and now alumni, resonates beyond the PNCA campus. Over a 20-year period, the Dorothy Lemelson Scholarship Program provided the opportunity for 21 students to attend PNCA, focusing on their studies and their creativity, without financial burden. This scholarship gift was visionary, unprecedented and transformational, changing the course of our student’s lives, giving them the courage to pursue their practice. Her faith in the creativity and ability of the Lemelson Scholars allowed them to grow, to thrive, and to truly live a life of creative practice across all disciplines and professions.
Mrs. Lemelson’s approach to philanthropy and the philanthropic work of her Foundation to offer meaningful and lasting impact is inspirational. We are deeply grateful for her personal example of giving from the heart with passion and conviction. By believing in our students, in PNCA, as well as many artists and organizations throughout Oregon, she has given back to us all. Her legacy in support of the creative spirit will endure.
