Portland Art Museum Acquires Painting by Nationale Artist and PNCA Alumna Anya Roberts-Toney ‘14

As a longtime supporter of the arts and emerging artists, PNCA Board Chair Scott D. Musch recently purchased “Summer’s Eve,” a painting by PNCA MFA graduate Anya Roberts-Toney ‘14, with the intention that it would find a home in the collection of the Portland Art Museum (PAM).
Working in consultation with May Barruel at Nationale – the gallery in Portland where Roberts-Toney exhibits her work – Musch offered to purchase the piece in the event that PAM was interested in adding it to their collection.
When Barruel approached PAM Curator Grace Kook-Anderson, she discovered that Kook-Anderson had already seen the piece and was in agreement with Barruel’s suggestion to present it to her acquisition committee. After it was introduced for consideration at a committee meeting in December 2020, PAM approved the acquisition of “Summer’s Eve” later that month.
“Scott has been a fervent believer in our artists’ work, and I am grateful for his support these past few years,” says Barruel. “It is rare to meet someone who truly understands how to help emerging artists and lead them to more sustainable careers.”

Pacific Northwest College of Art extends a huge congratulations to MFA in Visual Studies alumna Elizabeth Malaska, who was recently named one of the 2021 Guggenheim Fellows in Fine Arts.
It is with deep admiration and respect that Pacific Northwest College of Art remembers Dorothy Lemelson who passed away on March 10, 2021.
The museum obtained the painting through a generous gift on behalf of PNCA Board Chair Scott. D. Musch.
In recognition of Black History Month, PNCA recognizes Adrian Piper and her critically acclaimed video installation titled Cornered (1998), where viewers are encouraged to acknowledge miscegenation in America and challenge themselves to honestly address Black ancestry.
PNCA alumni create a replicable model that other museums and institutions can utilize in response to calls for systemic change.
